Acupuncture and Parkinsons

  • While acupuncture is not a 'cure' for Parkinson's Disease, it can help minimise many of the symptoms of PD.
  • Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture may maintain dopamine levels by preventing inflammation.
  • In one clinical trial, 85% of patients reported improvement of individual symptoms.
  • Acupuncture treatment is deeply relaxing, reducing the levels of stress which make symptoms worse.
  • Supportive. Most people say how supported they feel through the process of acupuncture treatment.
  • There are no adverse effects. Acupuncture therapy is safe and well tolerated in people living with Parkinson's Disease.

Further information about acupuncture in the treatment of PD can be found through The British Acupuncture Council at www.acupuncture.org

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on your response to acupuncture but normally one treatment a week over a three month period. At the end of the course, you will have a review with the acupuncturist of your treatment so far and if the benefits of treatment have been considerable and worthwhile to you, then a maintenance programme will be decided which could be one or two treatments on a monthly basis.

A caring, creative and supportive approach to living with PD

Your acupuncturist takes an holistic approach in helping you to enhance your health and well-being in order to not just alleviate some of the symptoms of PD, but to take some control back over your life when facing the challenges a diagnosis of PD brings to you and your loved ones. Family members are most welcome to try acupuncture too and to discuss any concerns they may have. Lori also offers self help techniques in relaxation to alleviate pain, stress and anxiety states. These techniques are gentle, safe and easy to learn so that they may be employed at any time you may need them.
